PCBN inserts increase production of interrupted turning hardened transmission parts

The use of cubic boron nitride (CBN) cutting inserts to machine automotive transmission parts is an increasingly common production strategy that is driving greater benefits to

manufacturers around the world. Although most workpiece materials are carburized or induction hardened, the latest material technology allows manufacturers who machine turned

parts (such as gears, shafts and crown wheels) to achieve longer tool life and the real benefits.

The traditional method of machining hardened parts is grinding. However, with the increasing use of ceramic and CBN cutting tool materials, steel hard part turning with a hardness

of 55-68 HRC has become a practical, efficient, reasonable and economical alternative.

When the hardness value of the part is 50 to 60 HRC and the surface roughness is required to be moderate, a ceramic insert material can be used. However, if the surface roughness

is required to be high, the cutting tool material used for hard part turning will eventually choose the CBN material.

CBN materials enhance the resistance to crater wear and fracture resistance when machining carburized and quenched materials at high speed. Our tipped pcbn inserts grade

such as BNT4, BNT6, BNT8 with different edge chamfering angles and widths accommodate applications with varying degrees of discontinuity. These edge treatments

are optimized to best balance long tool life and reliable machining operations.
